He was born on February 21, 1991, in London, England, and grew up in a creative environment with his mother working in film production and his father being a documentary filmmaker.

Alwyn attended the City of London School and later enrolled at the National Youth Theatre before studying English literature and drama at the University of Bristol. During his time at university, he appeared in several theatrical productions and gained experience in stage acting.

In 2015, Joe Alwyn made his screen debut in the short film “Becoming Vincent,” directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
